Cycling Biomechanics

Everyone can realise that we are not made to put our rear in a small little padded seat, placing our hands in a few equipped with levers controls and to set our feet to some rotating levers during long cycling days.

The Biomechanics of the cycling aim is making the ride in a machine of two wheels less traumatic possible for our body and/or optimize the position to maximize the performance without resign to some comfort.

This was once restricted to the cycling competition. Experience and certain standards allowed adjusting bikes riders according to trends or studies of the moment. Today this has become democratized and it’s reachable for everyone. Thanks to the progress of physiotherapy and acquired knowledge, we know that certain behaviours or posture on the bike increase performance and decrease the possibility of injury, and that is something that cyclists value more and more.

There are several reported methods, and an infinite number of parameters measured in the Biomechanics applied to cycling.

Some basic studies are based on the height of the seat, on the basis of the knee flexion angle, position of our cleats and the handlebar height/proximity. From the other side we have advanced studies, which allow looking at our tread and movement of joints (ankle, knee, hips) with reference to detection sensors or laser. The pedalling gesture with sensors placed in the feet, hand and back angulations’. Even take measurements of the pressure exerted by your body on the seat to optimize it to the extent possible.

Due to demand, multitude of centres that offer these services have proliferated, supported by adequate training and the necessary technology, will make more than one does not recognize his own bike when he/she uses it again.
