Today, SRAM unveils its latest gravel drivetrain products, the Apex AXS and Apex Mechanical groupsets, showcasing an advancement in the technology of this component. These groupsets provide gravel riders with a versatile and intuitive riding experience with a wide range of 1×12 gearing options, the go-to and reliable gravel setup.
The Apex AXS groupset represents a leap forward in terms of innovation, value, and reliability. With its 12-speed capability, wireless electronic shifting, and exceptional ergonomics, this groupset enhances any ride, enabling cyclists to fully immerse themselves in the cycling experience. The wide-range 1x configuration of the Apex AXS groupset eliminates the need for multiple front chainrings, allowing riders to concentrate solely on their riding. The groupset’s AXS compatibility ensures easy wireless setup and reliable performance. Additionally, the hoods have got new and optimized shape, the same one as in the SRAM’s new Force and Rival AXS models, providing riders with enhanced ergonomics for a comfortable grip.
For those who prefer mechanical shifting, SRAM offers the Apex Mechanical groupset, which incorporates the latest 12-speed technology derived from its premier electronic groupsets. With the 1x drivetrain gearing, a wide-range cassette and chain retention technology, the goal is to maximize the ease of use and minimize possible distractions that could happen when changing gears. The intuitive Double Tap shifting mechanism means that the gears can be controlled by a single lever. Moreover, the Apex Mechanical groupset shares the same hydraulic braking platform as the AXS groupsets, providing reliable stopping power.
The Apex groupsets offer two configurations, each designed to fit different rider preferences. The XPLR configuration, equipped with a 44T large cog, suits both tarmac and gravel terrains. Another option is the Eagle, a 50T or 52T large cog configuration, enabling riders to explore off-road adventures with an extended gear range. Both configurations offer an 11T start option for the smallest gear to ensure compatibility with a variety of setups.
The rear derailleur features a spring clutch mechanism that controls chain tension for consistent shifting, and the X-Sync technology of the chainrings also contribute to that chain control. The crankarms of the Apex 1 crankset are made of aliminium, and the longer DUB crank spindle will accommodate both road and MTB width frame bottom bracket
standards.
Recognizing the importance of power measurement for not only road but gravel riders too, SRAM offers an upgrade option for a power meter in the aftermarket. These power meters utilize spindle-based measurement technology, known for its reliability and accuracy, allowing riders to monitor their performance and progress.
In addition to the drop bar groupsets, SRAM caters to riders who prefer a flat handlebar setup, offering a flat bar option suitable for gravel, fitness, urban, and eBike applications. The flat bar option includes S-300 disc brakes and the Eagle shifter, providing riders with a choice between a trigger, Gripshift, or AXS controller.
The Apex AXS groupset is set to be available in retail from June 2023, while the Apex Mechanical groupset will be available from September 2023 onward.
